🌿 Saints’ Teachings
Kabir: “गुरु बिन कौन बतावे, सोहंग स्वर की बात।” → Without the Guru, one may hear the breath sound faintly, but cannot distinguish the subtle Sohang from ordinary body sounds.
Dadu Dayal: He explained that Sohang is ajapa jap (automatic repetition), already happening in the nose. But he added: “गुरु कृपा से ही सूक्ष्म स्वर प्रकट होता है।” — “Only by the Guru’s grace does the subtle sound reveal itself.”
Guru Nanak: “सास सास सिमरो गोबिंद, मन अंतर की उतार।” → Remembrance with each breath is possible for all, but Nanak emphasized that the Guru shows how to turn this remembrance inward, beyond mechanical repetition.
Bhagat Shukdev: He taught that Sohang at the nose is the true rosary, but also said that without Guru’s guidance, seekers confuse gross breath noise with the subtle vibration.
✨ Practical Essence
Without Guru: You can begin — awareness at the nose, noticing breath, even sensing Sohang faintly.
With Guru: The subtle distinction becomes clear, the practice deepens, and Sohang dissolves into silence and union.
Saints compared it to trying to tune a musical instrument: you can pluck the strings alone, but only a master shows how to bring it into harmony.
